LESTER J. BEAULIEU JR. "PROPERTY CRIMES DETECTIVE OF THE YEAR" AWARD

An Annual "Investigator of the Year Award" for a Dapig member is given every year for those members in charge of a major crime incident investigation that results in a successful prosecution that crosses multi-jurisdictional lines or the clearance of numerous cases. A member can also be nominated for making a major contribution to the welfare of the organization. Nominees for the award must be nominated by a peer member of DAPIG not their supervisor.

The award is named after Denver Detective Lester J. Beaulieu Jr., one of the original founding members of DAPIG in the early 1970's.

2008 Award Winner: Mark Spurgeon

Det. Spurgeon spearheaded a rather unusual kidnapping/assault case that involved a male stalking his ex-girlfriend and new husband. The suspect committed several crimes in multiple jurisdictions and was eventually arrested in La Canada, California outside of his ex-girlfriend's sister's house (who he had threatened to kill). Det. Spurgeon had kept communication open with Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office who eventually arrested the suspect. In the words of the LA County Detective, " This guy is one scary dude. He would have killed her if we hadn't located him."

Det. Spurgeon also identified two large burglary rings, one operating in the mountains of Boulder and Larimer Counties, the other operating along the Front Range. Det. Spurgeon's communication with other jurisdictions led to the recovery of over $80,000 in property and the clearance of over 40 burglaries.

Det. Spurgeon also learned of a large auto theft ring operating out of the Denver and Broomfield areas. After verifying information, Det. Spurgeon contacted detectives in the responsible jurisdictions. This led to the recovery of several high-end vehicles in Denver.

We congratulate Det. Spurgeon on his outstanding contribution to investigations. He was nominated for this award by his peers.

JC TYUS ACHIEVEMENT "OFFICER OF THE YEAR" AWARD

A new award this year from the Denver Area Property Investigators Group is the "JC Tyus Achievement" Award for outstanding police work in property crime investigations by a Colorado patrol officer.

The award is named after long time burglary detective JC Tyus who was a founding member of DAPIG in the 1970's.

2008 Award Winnter: Aaron Hassell

On March 8, 2008 at approximately 0545 hours, Officer Hassell observed a black Ford Bronco backed into a parking spot at a local gas station. Officer Hassell thought this was odd and further investigated the vehicle. Inside the vehicle he noticed a lot of copper piping which appeared to be cut. Initially he could not see any license plates on the vehicle, so he entered the gas station to look out the window, recording the temp tag on the vehicle. He returned to his vehicle and ran the plate and learned that the plate did not belong to the vehicle. He attempted to make a traffic stop but the vehicle took off and was abandoned at another address. The suspects were located shortly after at a third address and taken into custody.

The arrest of these individuals led to recovery of stolen property and leads on other burglaries in other jurisdictions metro wide, including Boulder County. This would not have happened if Officer Hassell did not follow his experience and intuition of things that did not seem right. This was a good stop, which proved very valuable.

We congratulate Officer Hassell on his outstanding police work.
